The History of the New World Building
The historic building that is home to Skopelos at New World and New World Inn is located at 600 South Palafox Street. Situated in the heart of one of “Americas Great Places,” the building is part of Pensacola’s rich historical tapestry.
Originally constructed as a box factory serving the busy harbor and city center of Pensacola, the New World complex on South Palafox Street is just one of the many historical buildings that can be found in Downtown Pensacola. Many of the façades and wrought iron balconies that line Palafox are remnants of this long-gone era.
Restored in 1983 by Arden and Kay Anderson, the building was remodeled to include 15 boutique hotel rooms, as well as large banquet facilities and spacious event spaces. In late 2006, Jim Homyak and Julie Lawson formed the 600 South of Pensacola partnership and purchased the building from Jim Bachus. The partnership continued the renovation of the building in 2007 by adding 600 South, an upscale wine and martini bar. The New Orleans-inspired courtyard was updated in 2008, adding a beautiful and functional space for open air dining and festive celebrations.
The Arrival of Skopelos at New World
The partnership that brought about Skopelos at New World in 2016 was formed between New World owner Jim Homyak and local celebrity chef Gus Silivos. Silivos now serves as Executive Chef and Director of Operations for the restaurant, hotel and catering services at New World.
The rebirth of the iconic Pensacola restaurant in this new location is a perfect example of our city’s recent resurgence. While honoring and preserving our historical roots, we continue to pursue the cultural and financial renaissance that is transforming the Downtown Pensacola area.
