Chipley was a railroad tycoon and statesman who built the first railroad in Pensacola. Known as the Pensacola & Atlantic Railroad, the line was the first to link the east and west coasts of Florida.Chipley’s achievements in the railroad industry inspired the residents of Orange, FL to rename their town to “Chipley” in 1882. Chipley served many terms as mayor of Pensacola and in the Florida State Legislature.The obelisk located in the center of Plaza Ferdinand VII at the intersection of Palafox and Government Streets was erected to honor Chipley after his death.
